Working For Yourself As A Mobile Mechanic Is A Path To Happiness And Freedom

mobile mechanic working on car

It is the new American dream. Mechanics that decide to go off on their own and work for themselves as mobile mechanics can drastically increase their income, create their own schedule, and determine their own destiny. While it may be intimidating to consider the risk of being on your own, the reward is all the more sweeter.

In a society that now prioritizes “on-demand” service thanks to Amazon (among others), there is a massive opportunity for anyone with automotive mechanic skills to take their career to the next level, increase their income, and answer to no one but themselves. It is truly a remarkable time.

Taking into consideration that the economy is booming with no signs of stopping, there has never been a better time to consider bootstrapping your own business utilizing, utilizing your in-demand skills that will always be needed.

Finding Customers

The first question that will come from many mechanics hesitant to make such a drastic move is, “Where will my business come from? Who will call?”

There are many opportunities to solve this problem, with relatively low effort.

The internet is sort of crazy in the power that it can provide. Setting up a website for your business has never been easier with services like Wix, Squarespace, or Weebly, you can build your own website in a few days for a bottom dollar cost.

Say you don’t want a website. Well, that’s just fine. Word of mouth, business cards, flyers hanging in local businesses, and friends can account for the startup business. Maybe you have existing clients or regulars that would serve as a foundation for your new business venture. The customers are there, you just have to find them and be brave enough to ask for them.

Massive Business Opportunities By Differentiation

With a little creativity, you can target areas of business that have been neglected. Road-side emergency work is definitely one sector that could be explored, but do not limit yourself to that being the only opportunity. There are many other services that can be offered that separate you from the pack.

For one, few services today offer routine mobile service.

Yes, people offer roadside mobile service, but there a sector of standard service that is still largely neglected by mechanics with mobile capabilities.

For example, many busy people find it a chore to take a car to a dealership or shop for a standard oil service. How many people would prefer to pay a premium to have the technician come to them to service their car? Quite a few, I’d imagine.

The same concept would apply for tire rotation, filter changes, and other routine procedures.

That’s one opportunity.

Be resourceful because there is a ton of business right in front of you. People want to give you their money for convenience. Take their money, and make it your money.

Low Start-Up Cost

Do you know what is great about being a mobile mechanic? You are mobile, and therefore do not need a shop or physical storefront to operate your business.

You just saved a boatload of money. The amount of upfront cash (or dreaded business loans) needed to start your own business goes down EXPONENTIALLY  when you remove the need for a physical shop.

Therefore, tools, a mechanic truck (we sell those here, but that’s not the point of this article), and a whole lot of enthusiasm pretty much cover the bases for getting started. When taken into consideration, this greatly reduces the risk of starting out on your own and makes the success of the business much more attainable.

The Why

Mobile mechanics can charge $40 per hour or more for labor, and that is a low estimate. We are in a time that people are willing to pay for convenience, and mechanics should capitalize.

Considering that a rough national average for automotive mechanics is $18.12 per hour, the pay increase opportunities are massive. Mechanics choosing to go mobile and work for themselves are doubling and tripling their income as a result.

Aside from the massive pay increase, the ability to be your own boss and work your own hours has merits all of its own.

If you want to start your day at 9 AM instead of 7 AM, go ahead. If you work 12 hour days from Monday to Wednesday then take it easy the rest of the week, it’s your call. If you want to take a day off to go give some rip large mouth lips on the lake, there is no one to stop you. You get the point.

Risk

The path to running a self-sustaining mobile mechanics business is not all sunshine and rainbows. One must make an assessment of themselves to decide if they are ready to absorb the risk of acquiring their own business and working through the slow times of the year. They will happen.

The road to business ownership (the road, ha!), is a tough one and obstacles will present themselves without fail. However, confidence and perseverance with the right amount of technical know-how and skill will allow you to prevail in the long run.

Without risk there is no reward, so baring that principle in mind, you need to make an elaborate self-assessment to decide if this is truly the right path for you because it is not for everyone.

Conclusions

Being your own boss isn’t for everyone, and we realize that. However, there is a massive opportunity for mechanics right now.

The ability to earn a ton more money and work your own hours sounds like it is too good to be true, but it’s not. It is a very achievable career path for the bold who are ready to absorb some risk, fight through slow times, remain calm and confident, and live life on their terms.

Let the mobile mechanic revolution commence.
